Safety is considered above and beyond the design of your gates. Unsafe automated gates pose a risk to occupants and visitors alike. At IQ Gates we take the safety of our gate installations very seriously and proudly advertise our Gate Safe emblem. All our automated entrance gates have a level of basic safety additions built into the design to ensure that they adhere to the latest safety legislation. Safety ‘upgrades’ or additional safety equipment can easily be integrated into your automated gate design as you require.

Photocell Sensors

All automated gates from IQ Gates will be installed with a photocell sensor. These essential safety elements of the gate design detect when there is an obstacle in the path of a closing gate. If the infrared beam between the ‘receiver’ and ‘transmitter’ of the photocells are interrupted by an obstacle the gate will stop closing and immediately return to its open position.

Built in Encoders

New automatic gate control panels and motors from IQ Gates include a built in encoder to enable them to detect the exact position of the automated gate at any one time and acts as an anti-crush device. If the encoders sense an obstruction in the path of movement via resistance in the gate movement then the gate will automatically stop, move in the opposite direction and become fixed until a start command is given via the access controls.

Sensor Nets or Light Curtains

Light Curtains act in a very similar way to photocell sensors however instead of relying on a single infrared beam being projected between a transmitter and receiver to detect an obstacle a light curtain, or sensor net, creates a full and invisible barrier over the gate opening to detect obstacles at any height of the gate opening. If an obstacle is detected the gate will stop closing and immediately return to its open position.

Safety Edges

These anti crush devices can be integrated into a bespoke gate design. If the edges of the closing gate are touched then the gate immediately stops closing and opens. This safety feature ensures that fingers or other body parts, likely set higher than the photocell sensor, do not get crushed in a closing gate.

Courtesy Lights

Automatic lights, connected to your automated gate control panel, can be integrated into your bespoke gate design to light up on the gate opening. This additional lighting can help you perceive any obstacles to your gates or car when it is dark, lighting up the edges of your gate opening where your headlights may not reach.

Safety Legislation

There is a wide array of British Standards and legislations that are paramount when engineering and installing an automating entrance gate. IQ Gates are affiliated with many gate safety advocates, including Gate Safe, to ensure that all gate installations are well engineered, legal and above all safe. Once an IQ Gate installation is complete you will be shown the various safety measures installed within your entrance gate.

Gate Maintenance

An automated entrance gate is classed as ‘machinery’ in accordance with The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). As with all machinery regular maintenance is paramount to ensure a long life to your automated gate and to ensure that all safety measures continue to function as required. IQ Gates recommends that our gates are serviced regularly and offer a wide range of comprehensive service contracts to suit all levels of gate designs and usage.
